Medicare Supplement Plans in Connecticut
A Medicare Supplement plan pays costs Original Medicare leaves behind and lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare. We help Connecticut residents compare plans and premiums.
What a Medicare Supplement plan does
Original Medicare pays most of your hospital and doctor bills, but not all of them. You still owe the Part A deductible each benefit period, a Part B deductible each year, and 20% of most Part B services, with no yearly limit. A Medicare Supplement plan, also called Medigap, pays some or all of those costs after Medicare pays its share.
You need both Part A and Part B to buy one. The policy covers one person, so spouses each buy their own. You pay a monthly premium for the supplement on top of your Part B premium.
Plans are standardized by letter
Medigap plans are identified by letter, such as Plan G or Plan N. The benefits for a given letter are the same no matter which insurance company sells it. What differs from company to company is the premium and the service. That makes comparing quotes simpler, because you are comparing the same coverage. Here is how insurance agents compare multiple carriers.
One federal rule matters here. People who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 cannot buy a plan that pays the Part B deductible, which means Plans C and F are not available to them. Most new enrollees compare Plan G and Plan N instead.
Why Connecticut is different
In most states, you can buy a Medigap policy without health questions only during a short window when you first get Part B. After that, insurers can decline you or charge more because of your health.
Connecticut law requires Medigap policies to be sold on a guaranteed-issue basis all year, and premiums must be community rated, so they are not based on your age. You can apply at any time, switch to a different plan later, or move from a Medicare Advantage plan to a supplement without being turned down for health reasons. Connecticut also requires insurers to offer Plan A to people under 65 who qualify for Medicare because of a disability.
Add drug coverage separately
Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage. Most people pair a supplement with a Part D drug plan. In 2026, no Part D plan can have a deductible above $615, and your out-of-pocket spending on covered drugs is capped at $2,100 for the year.
Supplement or Medicare Advantage?
A supplement usually costs more each month, but it gives you predictable costs and the freedom to use any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare. A Medicare Advantage plan often has a lower premium but uses a network and charges copays. Our article on Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage in Connecticut walks through the trade-offs.

Medicare Supplement Questions
Can I be turned down for a Medicare Supplement plan in Connecticut?
No. Connecticut requires Medigap policies to be sold on a guaranteed-issue basis all year, so an insurer cannot decline you because of your health.
Does my age affect my Medigap premium in Connecticut?
No. Medigap premiums in Connecticut must be community rated, which means the insurer cannot set your premium based on your age.
Do Medicare Supplement plans include drug coverage?
No. You add a separate Part D prescription drug plan. We can help you choose one that covers your medications.
Can I switch Medigap plans later?
Yes. Because Connecticut policies are guaranteed issue all year, you can apply for a different plan letter or a different insurer when your needs change.
