Don't Lag Behind
Medicare Initial Enrollment Period
If you’re new to Medicare, just looking at the process and paperwork alone may be completely overwhelming. You may be wondering how the process works from eligibility to enrollment. First, the most important thing to know is in order to qualify for Medicare, you must be 65 or older. You can also qualify if you are under 65 through disability.
When to enroll in Medicare will depend on your situation and how you qualify. Some individuals are automatically enrolled, while others will need to sign-up manually.
The first time you can enroll is called your Initial Enrollment Period.
Your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period usually:
- Starts 3 months before the month you turn 65
- Includes the actual month you turn 65
- Ends 3 months after the month you turn 65
If you don’t enroll when you’re first eligible, you may have to pay a Part B late enrollment penalty, and you may have a gap in coverage if you decide you want Part B later.
The reason why so many individuals choose The Jones Group to assist and help with their Initial Enrollment Period needs is because of the choice you’ll have to make, such as:
- Deciding if you want Part A & Part B coverage
- Choosing your coverage
- Signing Up
- To-do-list to finish for your first year with Medicare
The information is extensive and can oftentimes be overwhelming. These decisions are important, especially if you and/or your spouse require certain coverage. Its important that you choose the right plan for your needs and wants.

Initial Enrollment Period Important Information
When you become eligible for Medicare, you have a 7-month IEP (Initial Enrollment Period) to sign up for Part A and/or Part B coverage.
The 7 month Initial Enrollment Period begins 3 months before you turn the age of 65, the actual month you turn 65 and the 3 months after you turn 65.
Retiring and getting Medicare for the first time?
Here are two forms you will need:
Its very important to explore and begin the process of enrolling during the 3 months prior to turning 65. Should you decide to wait until the month you turn 65 or the 3 months after, your Part B coverage will be delayed. This delay could cause a gap in your Part B coverage.
If you didn’t sign up when you first became eligible or if you’re not eligible for the special enrollment period, you can sign up for Part A and/or Part B during the (GEP:General Enrollment Period) from January 1–March 31 each year.
To sign up for Part B, you’ll need to complete an Application for Enrollment in Part B (CMS-40B) which you can find, here.
